Year 5 Creative Writing Course

Creative Writing is an integral part of the 11+ exam process, as it allows students to demonstrate their ability to think critically and express themselves clearly and creatively.

This is important not only for the admissions process but also for academic and personal success in the long run.

ImagineInk – our Descriptive Writing Course (starts on Friday 9th  May)

 The short course on writing aims 

  1. to train your child’s imagination and originality to craft a piece of writing, such as a short story or a descriptive essay.
  2. to go beyond just conveying information
  3. to use language to paint a picture, evoke emotions, and create a sense of place or character.

Types of writing 

  • Descriptive

This course is suitable for children who intend to be taking the CSSE  11 plus exam (King Edwards, Westcliffe, Southend, Colchester); Chelmsford County High and Henrietta Barnet.

Children will be given homework and writing assessments will be conducted as part of the course.  There are 7 sessions (1hr 15 min each)

This July, we are introducing a brand-new English Booster Course (also partially covering others subjects)

  • The course will aim to revisit and revise the various types of English multiple-choice and written style questions that appear in the exam, then hone the skills required to answer them.
  • Decoding the various sorts of questions, the 11+ comprehension papers tend to ask, and how to go about deducing the answer. 
  • Our English Booster will be challenging. Sophisticated vocabulary and ideas will be used and discussed. Though challenging, it is to give our children the best chance to succeed.
  • Retrieval, inference, word definition and language techniques will be discussed and practised. 
  • Comprehension questioning styles vary – acclimatise children through different styles of question papers.
  • 200 Vocabulary Questions.

While the focus is clearly English, we will additionally have VR, Maths and NVR built into the schedule.  This will ensure children have sufficient practise on other subjects as well.

We are looking forward to this English Extended Programme and anticipate that children will get the best from our teaching.

TEST : The test will comprise of  multiple choice and a standard type test.

RESULTS

Day 4 – is the test day.  Results will be available online for the multiple-choice test.

Each child will be assigned a password and ID to log online and see the errors of the Day 4 test. Result will be available approximately 10 working days (excludes weekends) after the completion of the test. The scores will highlight the areas your child will need to start focussing on, whilst reaffirming the areas of strength.
The standard type test will be marked and handed over to the child.

August Final Revision

A final series of teaching, training and testing.  The August Summer Training our final revision that wraps up core subject skills along with well blended exam techniques.

We will recall, revisit and revise the core topics in English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Non-Verbal Reasoning Workshop 2024

The Summer Non-Verbal Reasoning Workshop  (for children who will be getting into Year 5 this year) will teach children  step by step to introduce and  solve the various types of common non verbal reasoning question styles.

Course objective :

  1. Course objective :
    1. Teach them the fundamental rules and how to apply these to the various styles of NVR
    2. Inspect and finding patterns and reason out to be able to eliminate and decipher the right answer.
    3. Look at the various variables before concluding what the right answer could possibly be.
    4. Homework will be given for further home practise

The NVR Workshop starts from TUESDAY – 20 Aug.  The class will be for 2 hours over 3 sessions and will include a final revision test on the last day.
